Kutiman Mixes YouTube

by Ben Posted in Other Music, Other Video, YouTube Finds

This dude grabbed clips of people playing instruments on YouTube and mixed them together to create songs. Freakin’ amazing. This one is my favorite so far. Check out more here. Thanks Killmon for linking me to it!

Kina Grannis

by Ben Posted in Other Music, YouTube Finds

Well, I was researching some garden-state type indie music and stumbled upon this girl from CA doing a cover of “Follow You Into The Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie. That particular version was so-so in my opinion, but this girl really has “it.” She already seems to be a YouTube phenom, so I’m sure that will eventually translate into commercial success. But IMO, her voice is pretty awesome, she can play guitar, and her songs are pretty good too.

Also, she’s half asian. Nice.

edit: Apparently she won a competition and had a youtube video aired during the 2008 superbowl and was signed to interscope records. So, maybe we will be hearing her on the radio afterall…

Star Wars Piano Fantasy

by Ben Posted in Other Music, YouTube Finds

So these two pianists wrote and arranged 3 pieces based on the themes and music from Star Wars. I’m linking the first of the three. I believe they either currently attend Juliard, or recently went there. Anyway, this one is really great, based mostly on the cantina music from Episode IV. I love hearing how they weave in the different themes. Man, and they’re so good at piano too, let’s not forget that. And they play so well together! Man!

I’ve counted at least 5 different themes woven in there, and that’s just my casual-fan Star Wars ear talkin’. My favorite? Around 2:51, remember that one? Good times! How many can you catch?

I think they’re really just advertising how good Asian people are with technology.

Guitar-capella

by Ben Posted in YouTube Finds

Jabarie kept showing me these videos online of guys singing all the parts to a song snippet and then piecing it together acapella style on the ‘net. Like this:

Matt walkley sent me this video of a guy doing the same thing with the guitar. It’s pretty cool, sounds amazingly like a MIDI file… which in a way, if you think about it, operates on the same principal. Sampled sounds triggered at the correct moments. Must’ve taken a long time to do this!

Songsmith - Creep

by Ben Posted in YouTube Finds

This one’s awesome. Probably because the Creep chord progression is relative unique, but for the most part all the chords DO match the singing. Now when I say match, I mean theoretically speaking they work with the melody, although the resulting chord progression doesn’t sound very good.

I like how the first two chords of the chords of the chorus are actually the same as the song. But during the bridge it really falls apart. So close microsoft songsmith, so close.
