St. Maarten

by Ben Posted in General

Ah, Christmas in the Caribbean. Is there really any other way to spend it? Actually, it doesn’t feel like Christmas at all! There are some lame attempts at Christmas decorations around town, but for the most part it’s just high-season at a tourist destination!

The beach we went to was quite nice yesterday. Real windy so there were tons of people on the water Kite-boarding, which is basically wake boarding using a big kite to pull you along. My brother in-law Dan has all the gear so he set up and went kite boarding. Pretty cool, although I don’t think i’d be able to do it myself.

First impressions of St. Maarten were interesting. I was kinda expecting Hawaii I guess? Or like Thailand? But it definitely isn’t. It’s a little more ghetto than most of the popular tourist destinations, but the beaches don’t disappoint. Anyway, I guess there’s notmuch to say other than it’s December 23rd, the weather is a nice 80 degrees and sunny, and I’m a little sunburned. Gonna try to enjoy it before it’s back to the grind.

End of the Year

by Ben Posted in General

So the end of the year is always pretty busy, because school is wrapping up, I have to shop for christmas gifts, make my travel plans (st. Maarten this year baby!) and hold my winter recital.

You know, that one (of two) time a year where parents get to show off how much their child has learned over the course of the year! It went really well actually, all my students played their best and the parents really seemed to enjoy it.

After the recital I had one weeks worth of lessons left so I took my gear to all of my students houses and gave them a taste of what it’s like in a recording studio by recording their recital pieces. If you are so inclined, you can take a listen here: http://lessons.ben-powell.net/recordings

Right now I’m at the recording studio waiting for the other guys to get here. That’ll be another post altogether though.
