Igudesman & Joo

by Ben Posted in YouTube Finds

In the vein of Victor Borge, I found these musician / comedians on the intarwebs. Very clever, consistantly funny routines… maybe funnier if you’re actually a musician? Who knows. Allow me to share two good ones with you all!

Free Dr. Pepper

by Ben Posted in General

Well, Dr. Pepper has made good on their promise that if Axl Rose released Chinese Democracy by the year’s end, they’d give up a free Dr. Pepper to everyone in the United States… except Slash and Buckethead. Unfortunately, I only heard about it today, and you only have until 6 PM today to get your free coupon. And of course, the Dr. Pepper servers are overloaded… blech! I love Dr. Pepper, I need my free one!

Anyway, it’s cool that they followed through because they certainly weren’t legally obligated to! If only Chinese Democracy was any good…

Studio Update

by Ben Posted in Other Music

In the Basement Studio

So surprisingly I’ve been pretty busy with recording projects other than my own! I guess I’ll trace back to summer first…

This summer started out with Martin & Dave wanting to record a couple of tracks they were working on for an upcoming project. I’m always down to help out some friends, so we recorded two tracks. This was right about the time i was starting to get into Video editing so I compiled this footage for all to see:

Of course the aspect ratio is off…
Then shortly after their project, Scooter came to me wanting to record a song of his own, which I was of course down with. Unlike Martin & Dave, he actually has a working project title called “The Neon Lights.” Here’s the track we worked on earlier this summer:

You Got Me - Neon Lights

Anyway, then the school year started and everything was whatever, but Martin & Dave came over to track 4 new songs. We managed to get the drums all finished… tried shooting video but i’ll blog about that in a different post…! At the same time, I started tracking a demo CD for Lindsay Williams, a colleague of sorts. She’s doing the whole piano/singing thing, so that’s a nice change of pace. Also in are some younger guys called “Gallows Hill” who Mike hooked me up with. They’re straight up metal, but I kid you not, these kids are wicked talented. Puts my guitar playing to shame. Their myspace is here: Gallows Hill

We’re doing the same songs that are already up there, but hopefully will have a different / more polished sound after having gone through my studio. Tracking the vocals will be interesting to say the least. I’m glad I’m trying my hand at this style of music.

Anyway, between all this stuff I’ve been keeping busy with recording… not to mention my own stuff! Once all these projects are done I’ll probably feel useless and lonely… ^_^

uStream

by Ben Posted in General

puppies from uStream

Mike has this really cute link of a live stream of some puppies:

http://cdn1.ustream.tv/swf/4/viewer.45.swf?cid=317016

And so after clicking there, i was perusing the site uStream.tv and it’s interesting. You can set up a live feed of whatever you want and host it there. Made me think maybe we can set up some sort of band-practice live stream… interesting possibilities. Then I started watching some of the pre-recorded videos which are very you-tube style. This one was one of the most watched ones. It’s a nice new-age piano thing, similar to what I was writing in 6th grade. I’m only linking it because it’s hilarious how he looks into the camera longingly while he plays… you have to check it out to understand what I mean. Unfortuantely I can’t just embed it here because apparently uStream sucks like that. But click this link and check it out, you’ll know what I’m talking about when you see it:

Awesome Electronica

by Ben Posted in Other Music

I think I’m gonna try to incorporate something like this in a project sometime soon.

Shame on Sarah Chek for not sharing this more vocally (to be fair, she published it on her blog… which I only started reading today.)

Interesting to Think About

by Ben Posted in Thoughts

While subbing I read this pretty long article with a lot of scientific mumbo-jumbo I didn’t necessarily understand. I found it through Digg, and the article is basically saying how Scientists can justify “cosmic coincidences” without resorting to a benevolent creator theory or belief… aka, religion. But, it is interesting to think about it. From the end of the article:

If these cosmic traits were just slightly altered, life as we know it would be impossible. A few examples:

• Stars like the sun produce energy by fusing two hydrogen atoms into a single helium atom. During that reaction, 0.007 percent of the mass of the hydrogen atoms is converted into energy, via Einstein’s famous e = mc2 equation. But if that percentage were, say, 0.006 or 0.008, the universe would be far more hostile to life. The lower number would result in a universe filled only with hydrogen; the higher number would leave a universe with no hydrogen (and therefore no water) and no stars like the sun.

• The early universe was delicately poised between runaway expansion and terminal collapse. Had the universe contained much more matter, additional gravity would have made it implode. If it contained less, the universe would have expanded too quickly for galaxies to form.

• Had matter in the universe been more evenly distributed, it would not have clumped together to form galaxies. Had matter been clumpier, it would have condensed into black holes.

• Atomic nuclei are bound together by the so-called strong force. If that force were slightly more powerful, all the protons in the early universe would have paired off and there would be no hydrogen, which fuels long-lived stars. Water would not exist, nor would any known form of life.
